The need for Pride is as strong as ever.

A huge amount of progress has been made for the LGBTQ+ community but the reality is, the struggle is far from over.

ABOUT

Wigan Pride promotes and celebrates equality and diversity by bringing together arts, music, street parade and positive messages at a big annual event in Wigan.

We also support smaller activities that encourage equality across the borough throughout the year. Led by the LGBTQ+ community of Wigan Borough and supported by Wigan Council and local NHS organisations. We also rely on the support of local businesses and local people to help us make each Wigan Pride event bigger and better.

As well as offering a fantastic day of entertainment for the whole family, Wigan Pride also helps remind our local community that equal rights are often hard won and should not be taken for granted. Celebrating equality helps us to value the importance of it and make sure that it continues.

Wigan Pride includes people of every race and faith, whether disabled or able-bodied, and all sexualities and genders including lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, queer, questioning, intersex, trans, genderqueer, gender variant or non-binary as well as straight and cis allies.

OUR MISSION

Wigan Pride is wholly run by a group of volunteers who are passionate about equality and diversity. We are a not for profit organisation, and any surplus funds we raise are used to support the LGBTQ+ community and improve the event.

Our mission is to make sure we provide a platform for Wigan's LGBTQ+ community to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ issues and campaign for the freedoms that will allow them to live their lives on a genuinely equal footing.

OUR AIMS

Encourage and support less well heard communities to have a voice and to shape Pride events across the borough throughout the year, for example, but not limited to: LGBTQ+ Young People, BYOU+ and Autism Friends.

Work together to implement Wigan Pride, working positively with the local community, including professionals, partners and local organisations.

Promote inclusivity within the Wigan Borough.

WHY WE MARCH

Members of the LGBTQ+ community still face so many challenges and stigmas, from kissing their loved ones in public, coming out to their friends, colleagues and family or even just being able to walk down the road as who they truly are.

We’re committed to making Pride the platform for all voices and the entire LGBTQ+ community.

OUR MASCOTS

In 2018, we introduced our first mascot Unity.

They were named via a social media competition in which we asked the public to suggest their favourite names for the borough's pride bunny.

They are used throughout our campaigns to show our commitment to making pride inclusive, especially to the younger generations.

Progress arrived in 2019 and joins Unity in this mission. Together, they have visited several schools and events sharing the message of pride and equality.
